Camp FAQ

What gear do I need?

Bring your instrument(s)! This is an acoustic camp so amps are not required. For more information, email

Can I still come if I’m not a musician?

Yes. You are welcome to come hang, explore, and have fun. It is quite common for non-musicians to attend camps of this nature. However, this camp is intended for those who want to learn about the music of Richard Thompson, Shawn Colvin, Martin Simpson, Henry Kaiser, Jill Sobule, Happy Traum and Bobby Eichorn, and songwriting and acoustic guitar-playing in general. In addition, you will have the opportunity to take singing classes and one on one tuition with Sloan Wainwright, as well as a workshop with Simon Tassano. Playing an instrument or having an interest in songwriting is not required, but is a plus.

Do I need to sign up for classes?

Songwriting* courses, are split into groups. When a class is full, you will be automatically switched to the other group. If you find yourself in a class that’s the wrong ability level, it should be easy to change. When registering for Frets and Refrains you will be asked your class preferences. Requests will be ranked in order of your signup date with priority given to returning alums who have already paid a deposit.

*Regarding Songwriting Classes: It should be noted, however, that you may only choose ONE songwriting instructor for the duration of the camp and ONE songwriting class per day.

What skill level is required to attend?

Classes and curriculum are developed to accommodate all ranges of playing. All classes are optional and open to everyone, except for the “Late Afternoon Classes” which will be divided into 3 levels: Advanced, Intermediate and Beginner.

Is there an age requirement?

Minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult. For questions or to discuss alternate arrangements, please call 845-254-8009

Are meals included?

Yes! Three gourmet meals a day along with evening snacks are included in your package price.

Are drinks included?

No, however a modestly priced full bar will be open throughout the week that includes a great selection.

Can I bring my own alcohol?

Yes, however it can only be consumed in the camping area, or in your inside accommodations. No outside alcohol is permitted in any of the other common areas due to liquor license limitations. Please respect this policy.

What will the Frets & Refrains schedule look like?

There will be a farewell breakfast the morning of Friday, July 15. Check out is 11 AM Friday, July 15. Exact schedule per day will be determined based on registration surveys received. Any show during the aforementioned time period is not part of the camp, but attendees wishing to stay an extra day in the area will receive advance notice of any concert and have the opportunity to purchase tickets.
